- To Tell the Truth… Day 70 – El Elyon – 6/30/20
“For You are the Lord Most High (El Elyon) over all the earth; you are exalted above all gods.”
Psalm 97:9
Psalm 97 paints a powerful picture of the Lord Most High. A God so awesome that mountains melt before Him! So magnificent that the earth trembles in His presence. A God above everything and everyone. The word Elyon means “Highest” or “Exalted One”. The emphasis is that when we worship our Eternal God and Father in heaven we are praising the one who’s power and authority is exceedingly abundantly above everyone and everything that exists.
In scripture Jesus is known as the Son of Lord Most High. The Holy Spirit is spoken of as the Power of the Lord Most High. As Followers of Christ, we are identified as Children of the Lord Most High. So when we pray, we are calling upon the absolute and eternal sovereign God. There is no higher court in the universe to plead your case or higher throne of authority to approach. How are we as children of the Most High instructed to approach Him? “Therefore let us draw near with confidence (boldly) to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16) On the one hand, we approach El Elyon with an overwhelming awe of His awesomeness. But as children, we crawl into our Father’s lap and put our arms around His neck, and pour our hearts out to Him. How awesome it is to be so loved by the Lord Most High. How wonderful it is to know that we can freely enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise and present our hearts to Him. As the Apostle Peter wrote in I Peter 5:6-7, “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of god, that He might exalt you at the proper time, casting ALL your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you.”
