  5. To Tell the Truth… Day 66 – True Friendship Part 2 – 6/17/20

“But there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.”
Proverbs 18:24b

We established yesterday that true friendship is a rarity. This might seem strange to you. You might think you are overrun with friends. But most of those we consider friends are mostly acquaintances. Wonderful acquaintances we enjoy having in our lives, and we thank God for them. But a true friend is a rare find.
We discovered yesterday that a true friend is selfless. They are not our friend because, or if, or when, or until. Proverbs 17:17a says, “A friend loves at all times.”  Their friendship is selfless, not self-serving. They love us unconditionally. When a person puts conditions on a friendship; they are making it all about them.
True friendship is also steadfast. Solomon reminds us that “There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” A true friend is someone who comes in when the whole world has gone out. Do you want to find out who your friends are? Then make a mistake – not a little one, but a big one, and see what happens. A lot of the people you thought were your friends will desert you like rats leaving a sinking ship. A true friend is one who when they board they stay aboard. In the calm they are there; in the storm they are there. When the wind is whipping they are there; when the lightning is flashing they are there. And they will see you safely into port. They are selfless and steadfast. This is the kind of friend we all need since “we all sin and come short of the glory of God.” It’s the kind of friend we should be as Followers of Christ.
