  5. To Tell the Truth… Day 49 – Eliminate Distractions Part 2

“The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go their way they choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity.”
Luke 8:14

God desires to speak to us through His word and through the Holy Spirit. Without His direct guidance we will not bear fruit. The question is whether or not we have ears to hear. In Luke 8:14 Jesus defines three distractions that keep us spiritually deaf. First, as we saw yesterday, there is the issue of worry. Worrying can lock us down overload our minds. The answer is to deliberately get before the Lord, give Him our undivided attention, share our hearts with Him, and seek His direct help!
We are not waiting on Him. He is waiting on us!
Secondly, Jesus mentions the riches of this world. This would include not only an excessive pursuit of money but material things as well. It’s not that money or material things in and of themselves are a problem. The scripture says it is the ‘love of these things’ that is the root of all sorts of evil. (I Timothy 6:10) When the pursuit of money and/or the possession of things prove to be more important to us than the pursuit of His kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33); what spiritual vitality we once had will soon be gone. All that we will have left will be an outward religious observance. What the scripture describes as having only “a form of godliness” (II Timothy 3:5) Jesus says it chokes out the Word in our lives and we become spiritually fruitless. It may be time to seriously evaluate our priorities.
“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
