  5. To Tell the Truth… Day 48 – Eliminate Distractions

“The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity.”
Luke 8:14

To grow spiritually we must hear from the Lord. But we can’t hear God if our mind is so crowded with other thoughts or concerns – particularly worries, plans, and activities. If we are always listening to the radio or watching television, or planning how to fit another activity into our already busy schedule, then the circuits are going to be to busy to hear what God is trying to say to us. We have to take time to eliminate distractions.
Jesus mentions three things in this verse that overloads our circuits making it difficult to hear His voice. First, He mentions worry. We are instructed in scripture to be “anxious for nothing“. Yet we are often in overload with worry. We are instructed to “bring everything to the Lord by prayer and supplication and with thanksgiving.” (Philippians 4:6) But this requires eliminating distractions and intentionally giving Him our time and undivided attention. It’s a choice! It is not an option if we want the Lord to to be involved in our lives. And it comes with a great promise! “And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)
Otherwise, worry will keep us spiritually deaf to the ‘still small voice’ of the Lord – and spiritually unfruitful in our lives.
He is waiting to hear from us,
