  5. To Tell the Truth… Day 36 – Forgiveness is not Cheap

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God has forgiven you.”
Ephesians 4:32

Biblical forgiveness is not a cheap term we just throw around that instantly makes everybody feel better. That is not real forgiveness. The bible reveals there are four characteristics to biblical forgiveness.
  1. Forgiveness is remembering how much we have been forgiven. As Paul wrote in his letter to Ephesus – “. . . just as in Christ God forgave you.”  This is the starting point for genuine forgiveness. When we have been hurt or disappointed by someone else, we still need a pure heart before the Lord. Otherwise, bitterness and resentment will take over our hearts. These two emotions are the devil’s play ground. Take time to thank the Lord for awesome grace and forgiveness He has lavished upon you.
  2. Forgiveness is relinquishing our right to get even. Romans 12:19 says, “Never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God, for He has said that He will repay those who deserve it.” Life is not fair, but one day God is going to settle the score. He is going to right the wrongs. He is the only just judge there is!
  3. Forgiveness is responding to evil with good. Jesus said in Luke 6:27-28, “Do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” How could we ever respond like that to someone who has hurt us? We can’t unless we surrender our hearts to the Lord and let the Holy Spirit fill it with the love of Christ.
  4. Forgiveness is repeating the process as long as necessary. in Matthew 18:21-22 the scripture says, “Peter came to Him and asked, ‘Lord, how often should I forgive someone who has sinned against me? Seven times?’ ‘No, not seven times, Jesus replied, but seventy times seven!” He is not saying we can stop after 490 times. He is saying that we are to forgive others as God in Him keeps forgiving us. We rejoice over the ever forgiving love of our Lord!
Thank you Jesus,
